The plat map shows where my gg-grandfather Fredrick Ellingson homesteaded with his son-in-law in Montrose Twp. Cavalier County, North Dakota. His homestead/farm was in the E1/2 of the SE quarter of section 25. On this 1912 plat map his son-in-law, H.O. Mellem, is living on Fredrick's claim. Next to him are the farms of two of Fredrick's grandsons. Fredrick died sometime between 1900 and 1910.
After my gg-grandfather Asle Lien lost his homestead in Grainfield County he went up one county to Howell County where he homesteaded until he left in the mid-1900's to go live with his daughters in Goodhue County in Minnesota. In Howell County his homestead consisted of 160 acres in section 10 and 160 acres in section 11. I believe on this 1909 plat map of Howell County his land would be the two quarter sections with the name of Mrs. G. Finseth on them. I also believe this is Gunhild Finseth who was one of his daughter. This is the daughter he stayed with for his last few years in Goodhue County.
The picture shows part of a 1909 plat map of Grainfield Township, Towner County, North Dakota. My gg-grandfather Asle Lien homesteaded a farm in section 34 during the early 1890's before he lost it because he couldn't pay his mortgage. When Asle received his final naturalization papers in 1892 one of his witnesses was Nels Sorenson. In section 15 is the farm of Nels Sorenson (spelled Sarenson on the map).
Most likely my gg-grandfather Lorenzo Dow Weinhart was named after the minister/preacher Lorenzo Dow. Lorenzo Dow lived and preached during the early 19th century. During the mid-19th century thousands of American boys were named after him. The 1850 U.S. census lists Lorenzo as one of the most popular first names for males in America. Lorenzo's popularity can be seen in the fact that at one time his autobiography was the second-best selling book in the United States. Only the Bible sold more.
My gggg-grandfathers (Phineas and Evan Young) and their families lived in Wayne County, Indiana during the 1820's, 30's, and 40's. I do know that when John S. (Phineas's son) purchased land in Hamilton County, Indiana, the transaction took place in Dublin, Wayne County. Recently I was able to find a deed showing that Evan Young and his wife Elizabeth sold property in 1834 in Milton, Indiana (Wayne County). The picture shows the location in Milton where I believe Evan and his family lived for, I believe, at least ten years.
