In the last half of the 1850's sentiments were high on both sides of the North/South/Slavery issue. The article in the picture is from a newspaper article published in Tipton, Indiana in 1858. The newspaper was a Republican newspaper meaning it was pro-North and anti-Slavery. My ggg-grandfather John S. Young was living in Tipton county at this time and would have read it along with political articles published in Democratic newspapers which would have been pro-South and pro-Slavery. It would be interesting to know what his feelings would have been on this issue.

1863 was a sad year for my gggg-grandmother Elizabeth Young. The year started out with two of her sons dying in the Civil War both in Tennessee. James died of wounds suffered in battle in January and her youngest child John died of disease a month later. Elizabeth had two one year-old grandchildren who were twins. They were the children of Ellis and Jane Young. One was a boy Isaac and the other was a girl Sarah. Isaac died in September of 1863 and Sarah died in November of that year. The picture is of cemetery information concerning the twins.

John Archer is one of my gggg-grandfathers. His father was Bezaleel Archer and his mother was Hannah Freeman. He was born 1814 in Monroe County, New York and died 1887 in Medina County, Ohio. His wife Sarrah Ann Edwards, my gggg-grandmother, was born 1817 also in New York and died in Medina County in 1848. My ggg-grandfather Lester B. Archer was their son. After Sarrah died John remarried at least two more times. In the 1850 census he was married to Lydia, age 24, and in the 1860 census he was married to Lois, age 47. The picture shows his death notice from the local newspaper.

In the mid-1880's Lorenzo Weinhart and his family were living in Nebraska. The picture shows a 1915 census card for his daughter Josie whose married name is Sheppard. It indicates that she was born in Nebraska in 1886. Also at that time living in Gage County, Nebraska was Lorenzo's brother George Washington Weinhart. His daughter, Eva, was born there in 1884. The 1885 Nebraska census shows Lorenzo's wife Florence's mother and father, Lester and Lucinda Archer, and two brother also residing in Gage County. I think it is safe to assume while Lorenzo was in Nebraska he and his family were probably living in Gage County.

My ggg-grandfather, John S. Young, from 1850 to 1859 while living in Tipton County, Indiana was a farmer. In 1859 he and his family moved into the town of Tipton. He changed his occupation to brickmaker. When he moved to Iowa in 1861 until the early 1880's he was again a farmer. In the 1880's he and his family moved to Mitchellville, Iowa. Again he changed his occupation to a brickmaker. This makes me wonder where he learned his brickmaking at. Could it be that his father, Phineas Young, was a brickmaker. The picture shows his occupation from the 1900 census.

This is a picture of my g-grandmother Bertha (little grandma) Fredrickson and 11 of her children (she had a total of 15). My grandfather Ben Fredrickson is kneeling in the first row with two of his sisters. Little grandma is in the center.
