The farm that my ggg-grandparents John and Mary lived on in Iowa was located on section 16 of Franklin Township of Polk County between the farms of L.C. Nobles and A.J. McCleary. He owned between 140-150 acres. The value of the farm in 1870 was $4500 and in 1880 only $3600. This was probaby the result of the financial panic that struck the country in 1873.
Evan Young was born in 1823 in Pennsylvania. He is either the brother of my ggg-grandmother Mary B.C. Young or the brother of her husband John S. Young. I have always placed him in the family tree as Mary's brother. I have changed my mind and I am going to place him as John's brother. When Mary's mother died in 1868 her property was divided up by her children and sold to the same buyer. Evan was not one of the names of the children who inherited property. Based on this I am going to assume for now that Evan is John's brother. The picture shows Evan's family in the 1885 Kansas census.
This is the tombstone for Samuel Jeptha Meader. He is one of my ggg-grandfathers. He was born in Vermont in 1818 and died in Iowa in 1900. He is buried at the Hopkins Grove Cemetery in Union Township, Polk County, Iowa. He was born in Vermont, lived for several years in Canada, married Sarah Scribner in Henry County, Ohio where he had a farm, and moved to Iowa in the mid-1850's. He had six children. One of the them John Edward would be my gg-grandfather. Sarah died in 1860 and he remarried in the early 1870's to Nancy Higby.
