My g-grandparents, Sjur (Syvert) and Ingeborg Markusen, were among the first members of the Kenyon Hauge Church that was formed in the 1859. It is also quite possible that they were the first or one of the first marriages performed in the church. Their daughter Isabelle though was the first baptizism to take place in the church. It occurred June 21, 1861 (see picture).

Hi Les,

Since you have a person named Sjur, you surely must know how to pronounce it! Can you tell me how it is pronounced?

My wife has many Sjur's in her Norwegian ancestry, and I always figured that it was pronounce "shure" or "see-your" or similar. You listed "Syvert" in your post, and some of her Sjur's have been "Seaver" or "Sivert" in the census records.

Not having any Norwegian heritage, I have no clue!

Thanks for any help -- Randy Seaver (rjseaver@cox.net)
