Most people don't know that before there was an Ellis Island there was
Castle Garden. This is the place where immigrants entered the United States from 1855 intil 1890. Norwegian ancestors that most likely came through Castle Garden are the Lars Haselhaugen family, Fredrick Ellingson and his wife, Nub Fredrickson and his family, and Asle Lien who was the last in 1881. My gg-grandfathers Erick Gunhus and Sjur Markuson arrived in the United States before Castle Garden opened. My gg-grandmother Ingeborg Bendixson and her family appears to have landed at Quebec, Canada as does another gg-grandmother Astrid Lien and her family.
